TechCrunch50 2009, day 2
We’re beat after having a BLAST yesterday at the W. Great meeting the friends and new friends of Burt: Ayelet Noff, Sean Percival, Steve Chen, Dave McClure (”He’s the AARRR guy!”), Mike Butcher, Robin Wauters, Drew Houston (”We’ll marry you in Amsterdam”), and all those I’ve forgot to mention!
For us the most significant day was Day 1, but Day 2 had a lot to offer too.

Specifically Affective Interfaces held a very non-business type presentation of a very interesting product. Their technology register emotions from facial expressions. The emotions can be shown on a timeline, say, from a user watching a video. This would be an absolute KILLER tool for Creatives to use to test out the effects of their campaign. In fact, you could tailor the ad to deliver the most desired recations over time.
After a lunch at The Slanted Door, we set the after noon sessions aside to meet the money men in downtown SF.
While it’s clear that the recession have shifted the use of VC money towards the usual: Safer bets, Protecting investments and Serial entrepreneurs; there is still a lot of money out there and a lot of opportunities to discover. Discussing how to stage the company for the best possible investment with people who know both sides of the table was really educational. We left that meeting in high spirits.
Back at TechCrunch50, the winning company 2009 was RedBeacon. Their service connects service buyers with local businesses and professionals. It’s an interesting service, but one that might be hard to envision working back home, since it’s so reliant on scale. In fact, we’ve already had a very similar service in Sweden, and it failed. We’re really looking forward to see the development of that service in an economics of scale.
While the winner was deserving we were surprised there wasn’t more opportunity at this years TechCrunch50. When the biggest buzz at the conference is Google launching a new product to quickly browse the web you know there was something missing.
But awesome nonetheless. Will be interesting to benchmark TC50 with DEMO next week.
